Le terme « Helichrysum » vient du grec helios, soleil, et chrysos, or (allusion à la couleur générale de la fleur). L’appellation « italicus », vient du latin italicus, Italie, région où la plante a été décrite pour la première fois. Le terme “immortelle” viendrait de la conservation exceptionnellement longue des bouquets secs.
Elle est présente tout autour de la Méditerranée. Elle prend la forme d’un petit buisson de 40 à 60 cm en hauteur, fleurissant jaune d’or de début juin à fin juillet. Elle est réputée pour sa forte fragrance, et on l’utilise couramment pour en extraire de l’huile essentielle, à partir de souches cultivées.

L’huile essentielle d’immortelle est incontestablement l’huile essentielle la plus connue et la plus recherchée en Corse.
Ses vertus sont connues avant tout pour soigner les hématomes, les douleurs inflammatoires, les troubles de la circulation sanguine, mais également les phlébites, la rétention d’eau, les jambes lourdes, les rhumatismes, les allergies et les rougeurs de la peau.
En cosmétique, elle est utilisée pour ses propriétés anti-oxydantes et anti-rides.
L’huile essentielle d’immortelle Corse a une composition très complexe car elle se diffère largement grâce à son taux de diones (italidiones). En voici sa composition:
- Acétate de néryle (de 10 à 35% suivant les régions)
- Propionate de néryle (4 à 7%)
- Italidiones (5 à 9%)
- Alpha et gamma curcumène (alpha : 2 à 3% ; gamma : 4 à 7%)
- Nérol (2 à 3%)
